Join us Wednesday November 20th at 6pm before the Rome Historical Society’s November Program Highlights of the Photo Collection for the
Book Release Party of Rome Memories, A Photographic History of the Early Years.

With help from the Rome Historical Society, the Oneida County History Center, and the community, Rome Memories offers a glimpse of the Rome area from the mid 1800’s to the 1930’s, Pick up your preordered copy, mingle, enjoy light refreshments and be one of the first to snag a copy of this unique piece of local history. Highlights from the Photo Collection

For over ten years, Mike Huchko, a long term volunteer has been working on organizing and cataloging the Rome Historical Society’s photograph collection. During that time, he has unearthed many interesting photos from Rome’s early days. Train wrecks, car races, plane crashes, and more. Mike will be showing off some recent finds and longtime favorites at the Rome Historical Society on November 20th at 7:00 PM.

Huchko has scanned thousands of photos and glass plate negatives that have been donated to the Society. Mike also fields many of the photographic requests from researchers. This research involves searching through tens of thousands of photos; many of which are the work of two Romans, CB Howland and JM Brainerd, who captured news events as well as social gatherings in Rome during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Mike will show some of the favorite images he has discovered including photos of sporting events, early views of Camp Kingsley, and even a “walk down Dominick Street,” circa 1900. Also featured will be select images from the Peter Leonard Collection, a photo collection of over 1,000 photos which the Society purchased in 2017.
